Aziza Nawal

Aziza Nawal has been involved in the art of Oriental Dance (belly dance) for over 9 years. Aziza's repertoire includes her renowned double sword dance, raks shemedan (traditional Egyptian candelabra dance), cane, Khaleegi (Saudi/Gulf dance), Moroccan folk dance and the use of finger cymbals. She is also considered a master of interpreting intricate and dynamic drum solos. Aziza Nawal is the Director of the Sawah Dance Ensemble as well as Co-Sponsor of Atlanta Danse Orientale Society's annual Egyptian Nights dance event.

Aziza Nawal attributes her compelling performance skills to her lifetime love of epic movies and vaudeville. In addition, she has studied with many top instructors and has amassed a collection of videos to glean a better understanding of the dance from the "greats". Her constant research has broadened her abilities as a dancer and fulfilled her intellectual understanding as well.

Aziza Nawal was the winner of Middle Eastern Dance in North America Competition 2002 and nominated for Best Kept Secret 2002 by Zaghareet Magazine. She has also been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Atlanta Journal Constitution, and Jezebel Magazine among others. She has appeared on WGCL's Good Morning Atlanta, Fox Television's 30 Seconds to Fame and had the pleasure of performing for former President Jimmy Carter. Aziza Nawal recently returned from Brazil where she taught a workshop and performed in the Mabruk Festival, she was also interviewed for the Argentine television show Araceli Odelisca.
